US NFL champion kills self
Chicago Bears former safety Dave Duerson holds up his drivers' license during a public tribute to his teammate Walter Payton at Chicago's Soldier Field in this Nov 6, 1999 file photo.
Dave Duerson, who played on Super Bowl winners with the Chicago Bears and New York Giants, was found dead Thursday night at his home in Miami in southeastern Florida, United States.
Duerson, 50, committed suicide with a gun shot to the chest, which left his brain undamaged, said detective Robert Williams, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department. No immediate cause of death was given.
Duerson's pro football career was filled with accomplishments. He was a four-time Pro Bowl (all-star game) safety of the US National Football League (NFL) and two-time Super Bowl champion.
In this Aug 14, 1989, file photo, Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson (22) scrambles for running room after intercepting a pass as Miami Dolphins Jeff Uhlenhake (63) grabs hold during an NFL football game in Miami.
Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson is shown in this 1988 handout photo released by NFL Photos.
